2008 MEMBER PROGRAMS**

** Programs effective through September 1, 2008

ELECTRIC WATER HEATER REBATES:  (High Efficiency Electric Water Heaters)

  • Rebates apply to members of the Cooperative who purchase and install an electric water heater that meets all Firelands rebate requirements. Water heater must be installed at a location receiving electric service from Firelands Electric Cooperative.
  • Before water heater rebates are issued, the water heater tank must be inspected and approved by a Firelands service technician and PeakBuster* Radio Controlled Switch (RCS) must be installed and/or inspected at no charge to the member.  These radio devices are activated during peak demand periods, usually during the summer months of June, July and August and winter months of December, January and February.  When the Cooperative experiences high loads during extremely hot and humid or cold and windy weather, the switch is activated to temporarily cut power to the water heater circuit.  When Firelands’ high peak demand loads begin to subside, power is restored to water heaters.
  • Controlling electric water heaters during periods of high demand for electricity saves money for the cooperative and all of its members because less high-cost “peak” power is needed. Today’s new high-efficiency electric water heaters store hot water so well that most members do not even notice when water heater circuits are controlled during peak demand times.
  • Water heaters and water heater repair service (elements and thermostats) are available from Firelands Electric Cooperative at competitive pricing.  Water heater installation is not available.  Please contact Firelands’ Member Services Department for pricing and delivery.

NEW CONSTRUCTION or switching from fossil fuel:
Marathon – 85 Gallon w/Lifetime tank warranty = $400* rebate
Marathon – 50 Gallon w/Lifetime tank warranty = $300* rebate

Non-Marathon 80 Gallon w/6+ year tank warranty = $200* rebate
Non-Marathon 50 Gallon w/6+ year tank warranty = $100* rebate

REPLACEMENT of existing water heater:
80 Gallon or larger tank w/6+ year tank warranty = $150*
50 Gallon tank w/6+ year tank warranty = $100*

FIRELANDS WATER HEATER REATE REQUIREMENTS:
Water heater must meet Firelands ’ guidelines for energy efficiency:

  • Energy Factor = 0.90 or greater, based on Gama Efficiency Rating Directory
  • Minimum 50-gallon tank capacity.
  • A PeakBuster* RCS must be installed to control the water heater circuit

ELECTRIC WATER HEATER PEAKBUSTER* RCS REBATE

  • $25 Rebate applies to members of the Cooperative who purchase and install an electric water heater that DOES NOT meet Firelands’ water heater rebate requirements.
  • A water heater Radio Controlled Switch (RCS) must be installed and/or inspected.

PEAKBUSTER* COOLING & HEATING INCENTIVE PROGRAMS:

Firelands Electric must pay higher prices for electric energy purchased during times of high demand for electricity.  On very hot, humid summer days (or on very cold, windy winter days) the demand for electricity goes way up when everyone in the region turns on their cooling (or heating) systems.  This high demand for energy causes the price of electricity to increase and Firelands must pay higher prices.  To limit the use of high priced electricity during these high demand periods, we install PeakBuster* load management controls to temporarily control members’ cooling (or heating) systems – and keep everyone’s electricity bills as low as possible.

COOL RETURNS AIR CONDITIONING PEAKBUSTER*:  A separate RCS is installed to control Central Air Conditioners or Heat Pumps for summer load management.  Only the A/C/ outdoor unit (compressor) will be controlled by the radio switch.  This control system limits the run time of the cooling system compressor during summer peak demand, usually late afternoon and evening control sessions typically last 4 hours.  Under peak load conditions, few control sessions may extend to a maximum of 6 hours.

Your air conditioning cooling is never completely shut off.  Instead the control limits the amount of time the cooling compressor can run during each hour.  The indoor air handler will be allowed to operate normally during control periods.  Thus, the indoor air (fan) will circulate the air throughout the home even when the compressor is shut off providing maximum comfort during control periods.  The RCS is programmed so that your cooling compressor will never be off more than 12 minutes during any half-hour.

COOL RETURNS CREDIT:  (Load Management for Summer Peak Demand)

  • $20 credit on the September electric bill each year
  • FREE installation of Cool Returns* Load Management System for central air conditioner or heat pump systems.

DUAL FUEL SYSTEM REBATE:  (Air-source Heat Pump added to Gas, Propane or Oil Furnace)

  • $100 per ton (max 3 ton) Rebate for NEW Heat Pump.  (Not available for replacements)
  • Special Dual Fuel discount electric rate, in effect November through March.
(Approximate 15% discount on monthly use from 1000 kWh to 4000 kWh)
  • $20 Cool Returns Credit on September electric bill each year.
  • FREE installation of Cool Returns PeakBuster* Load Management System.

HEATING SYSTEM PEAKBUSTER*:  A RCS device is installed to control your electric heating system during winter peak demand times, usually from 5 to 10 PM on very cold, windy days.  The RCS for an electric home heating system includes a 65°F override sensor, which automatically overrides the control system if the home cools down to 65°F, and maintains the home at or above 65°F until the control period ends. Heating control periods can be as short as 1 to 2 hours, but may last as long as 6 or 7 hours.
