Cardinal Power Plant Tour

If you have ever wondered where Firelands Electric Cooperative gets it electricity or how electricity is generated, you may be interested in taking a tour of the Buckeye Power, Inc. Cardinal Generating Station. The Buckeye Power, Inc. Cardinal Generating Station located on the Ohio River at Brilliant Ohio.

Firelands is offering members of the cooperative the opportunity to see where and how their electric power is generated. The trip is free to cooperative members and includes a interesting and informative guided tour of the plant. Firelands charters a bus, which departs from the New London office headquarters and the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center (ACWHCC).

Since the power plant can be a potentially hazardous area, tour participants must be at least twelve (12) years old, unless specifically authorized. There will be a large amount of walking, descending several flights of stairs and going through some hot and dusty areas. Persons with health concerns or who require assistance with walking (cannot walk 1-mile or more without resting) should not take the tour.

TOUR GUIDELINES:
Because the power plant can be a potentially hazardous area, the following must be considered when arranging to tour the Cardinal Plant facilities:

  • Cardinal power plant tours are only offered to members who have not previously toured the plant.
  • Since there will be a lot of walking, descending stairs and going through some hot and dusty areas, health problems must be considered before entering the plant.
  • There will be a large amount of walking, descending several flights of stairs and going through some hot and dusty areas. Persons with health concerns or who require assistance with walking (cannot walk 1-mile or more without resting) should not take the tour.
  • Touring the Cardinal Plant entails some walking on open grating and descending several fights of stairs, therefore PROPER ATTIRE IS REQUIRED – no shorts, tank tops, open toed shoes or shoes with raised heels, and NO SANDALS.  Sensible footwear covering the entire foot must be worn and please wear slacks or jeans – no shorts.  Some touring will be done outside of the plant in areas where hot temperatures and coal dust is unavoidable.  We suggest that you wear “wash and wear” clothing that can be easily cleaned if it gets soiled.
  • Safety is our #1 concern.  Please be sure to wear the provided eye, head and hearing protection.  Contact lenses are allowed, but not encouraged.  If feasible, it is recommended that persons needing vision correction wear eyeglasses.
  • Both for personal safety and the protection of equipment, guests must stay with their tour guide and follow the tour guide’s instruction.  Questions are welcome during the tour.  Unless specifically authorized, tour participants must be at least twelve (12) years old.
